Sydney University MiniMUNs

Model UN can seem a bit scary to newcomers, even though people who participate in it are generally a nice bunch. To help ease novices into the rules and process of Model UN, we stage the MiniMUN sessions on campus. These take place in evenings throughout semester, and there will be several throughout the year. We provide pizza, drinks, and some great Model UN action.

Because of the time constraints, we don't follow the full MUN process outlined at How Model UN works. Instead, we take a pre-prepared draft resolution and discuss it. Most of the time is focussed on proposing and debating amendments. If you have not participated in Model UN before, this scaled-back process gives you a good introduction to the concepts of formal debate (don't worry, it's not overly formal - simply moderated by a director, so only one person can speak at once) and informal caucus discussion, as well as the larger framework of Model UN rules. The sessions are relaxed and casual so you can feel free to ask questions about the rules to any of the more experienced people there, though it's probably best to pass a note rather than interrupt someone's epic speech.

Afterwards, those who are so inclined usually head to one of the many pubs around campus for a few post-negotiation drinks.

If you join the Society, you will be notified of MiniMUN sessions via email, and the dates and venue will also be posted on this website as we approach the time.
