MiniMUN: Human trafficking

04/17/2008 - 17:30

5.30 - 7.30pm, Thursday April 17, Holme Reading Room

Our second MiniMUN for the year will focus on human trafficking, an issue with tremendous social and human rights importance.

If you're thinking of being part of our AMUNC delegation in July, attending MiniMUNs is a great way to develop some experience and learn the rules of MUN in a more relaxed environment before the conference. All are welcome, so feel free to show up even if you're not going to AMUNC.

If you'd like a particular country, please let us know by posting on the wall or emailing uns@usydunsociety.org .

As usual, we will supply pizza, snacks and drinks, and the event will be free for everyone.

5.30 - 7.30pm, Thursday April 3, Holme Reading Room

This Thursday we'll be hosting our first MiniMUN of the year. It doesn't matter whether you're a old hand at Model UN or have never touched a country placard in your life, all you need is an interest in international affairs and we'll provide you with a fun and rewarding forum to learn about current issues. The event will be free for everyone.

We'll be discussing a pre-written resolution to give you a chance to do a little background reading - don't worry, the bar isn't set too high. Some helpful research links can be found via the event's Facebook page. You can also download the draft resolution.

03/17/2008 - 19:30

5.30 for 6.00-7.30 pm, Monday March 17, Education Lecture Theatre 351.

In conjunction with the UNICEF liaison officer for Sydney University, we'll be having a screening of a documentary entitled "The Philippines: Changing the Legacy", which deals with issues of poverty and development central to the UN's involvement in much of the globe. Dr Bronwyn Winter from the Faculty of Arts, who has recently returned from a speaking tour of the Philippines, will also provide some brief remarks to put the film in a current context.

We'll provide some nibbles and refreshments.

Meet at 5.30 for a 6pm start. The film runs for about an hour so we should wrap up by 7.30pm. Entry is by gold coin donation to UNICEF and all are welcome. This promises to be a very interesting film so we hope to see many of you on the night.

History tells us that diplomats must not only be masters of crafting speeches and drafting documents, the art of schmoozing over a drink is also vital.
