The 2012 Asia-Pacific Model United Nations Conference will be hosted by La Trobe University. This years conference promises an ‘unparalleled social and educational experience’ as a week of intense debate sets itself in the surroundings of the truly beautiful city of Melbourne. Boasting 23 committees to entice your wide-ranging appetites, the Secretariat are offering innovative committees such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF), UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the always delightful and entertaining chance to be apart of the International Press Gallery and three legal committees challenging the boundaries of international law. The theme for AMUNC 2012 is ‘Rights, Recognition, Responsibility’. “In the spirit of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, the conference will address the issue of refugee rights, a topic that is central to the Asia-Pacific region. The 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees is one of the most important instruments in international law. The convention is a binding treaty that dictates how signatories must treat asylum seekers and remains one of the greatest achievements of the UN. It is in this spirit that we will undertake AMUNC2012. Refugees have rights, recognition of those rights is essential to UN principles, and we have a responsibility to see them enforced. AMUNC2012 will be an exceptional example of realising these principles through youth empowerment and leadership.”
