Hey everybody!

It’s the end of one year and the start of another. That means an entirely new Exec team. Yay! My name is Matt Mills, and I’m now in charge of the website (God Forbid!). Looking forward to the year ahead!

We often take open political debate for granted. But many groups around the world are silenced by their their government or their society. The recent revolutions in Tunisia and Egypt, and the trial and imprisonment of Russian punk band Pussy Riot, are two opposite examples of oppressed peoples demanding their right to political expression. In both cases, the most prominent voices were those of young adults, dissatisfied with the opportunities provided to them, and angry with their government’s blatant disregard for their opinions, needs and wants. In fact, young people are continually disenfranchised around the world, whether by systematic means, or by subtle disincentivisation as is the case in the USA, the UK, and Australia. But how can the international system assist in the struggle for this fundamental human right?

To explore this complex and challenging area of international politics, Sydney University UN Society will be holding its Week 5 MiniMUN on the topic ‘From Tahrir to Pussy Riot: Freedom of Political Communcation in Emerging Democracies’.

For this event, we are honoured to announce that Dan Ryan, UN Youth Australia Ambassador to the United Nations, will be joining us to share his personal experiences with youth enfranchisement, and to gather opinions for his upcoming address to the UN General Assembly in New York. Dan is currently on a nationwide Listening Tour, to hear from young people all over Australia. If you have a specific issue that you wish would be raised on the world stage, or you would like to share an opinion on a current issues, or you would like to be a part of the process of setting the agenda for the United Nations, Dan is eager to discuss anything and everything with you.

After Dan’s presentation and roundtable, Doc will be hosting a MiniMUN on the right to political expression. Following the success of our last MiniMUN, we will again have a short interactive briefing, to help everyone engage with the topic. And afterward, there will be dinner!

The event is next Tuesday (the 28th of August) from 5pm. Doc looks forward to seeing you all there!

It would be a wonderful chance to see everyone before the traditional hermit-lifestyle settles in and well, Doc has missed you.

Exciting News! This year, Doc is traveling to the hallowed halls of Oxford University for the 2012 OxIMUN and would love for you to join him! This MUN conference is truly unique, giving you the opportunity to experience the talent and the resources of one of the world’s most prestigious Universities.

Set in several of Oxford’s most beautiful colleges, the Oxford International Model United Nations Conference offers delegates a unique opportunity to debate in the historic surroundings and rich cultural environment of one of Europe’s oldest universities.

OxIMUN will run from Friday 2^nd November until Sunday 4^th Number, 2012. This year the theme is: Developing Global Partnership. The conference is open to both delegations and individual delegates currently undertaking undergraduate or postgraduate study.

OxIMUN is internationally renowned for its high standards of debate and its extremely well-organised programme. For this year’s conference we expect approximately 500 delegates from across the world, bringing with them an unrivalled diversity of views and backgrounds. OxIMUN aims to provide ample opportunity for debate and maximum participation for each delegate. With its committees ranging in size from 15 to 50 delegates, OxIMUN is tailored to the experienced delegate as well as to those new to MUN, as our Directors are always ready to provide assistance.

Humanitarian Week is fast approaching, and Doc will be hosting a Humanitarian Week MiniMUN on ‘Human Trafficking: Cooperation and Enforcement in the 21st Century’.

When: Tuesday the 8th of May, at 5pm
Where: Latin Room 224. (Go to Quadrangle Lobby C and go to the end of the hall)

Every year, human traffickers make $8 Billion USD from the sale of an estimated 2.5 million people. Despite a global consensus that slavery is an affront to human dignity and an attack on humanity itself, criminal networks continue to trade in human misery. The only remaining issue is to construct a global humanitarian framework for the enforcement of anti-slavery legislation.
For Humanitarian Week, Doc is trying something new: before the MiniMUN starts, there will be a surprise activity, so come along at 5pm sharp! After the MiniMUN concludes at 7pm, everyone will be heading out to get dinner and drinks. See you all next Tuesday!
